Standard Prescription

cefuroxime __mg IV/IM Q   H (__mg/kg/24h)
cefuroxime __mg PO BID (__mg/kg/24h)

Dosages

Children:
25-50 mg/kg/dose IV Q8H. Max. 2000 mg/dose

Osteomyelitis:
50 mg/kg/dose IV Q8H. Max 1500 mg/dose

Adults:  
750-1500 mg/dose IV Q8H

Oral dosing:
Children: 10-15 mg/kg/dose PO BID. Max. 500 mg/dose

Osteomyelitis:
33 mg/kg/dose PO TID. Max. 1000 mg/dose

Adults:  
250-500 mg/dose PO BID

Second generation cephalosporin antibiotic

Comments

Bioavailability of the oral tablet is increased when administered with food.

Cefuroxime axetil oral suspension is not palatable and is less bioavailable than the tablet; see cefprozil for second generation oral cephalosporin.

Dosage adjustment required in renal impairment.
