Standard Prescription

Lamivudine __ mg PO Q__H x __ weeks

Dosages

Prevention of Perinatal HIV Transmission: (Moderate to High Risk Situations):
> 2 kg:
6 mg PO Q12H x 2 weeks
<= 2 kg:
4 mg PO Q12H x 2 weeks

Presumptive Therapy:
If Birthing Individual/Mother is known to be HIV positive and very high risk (HIV VL > 1000 copies/mL) contact Oak Tree Clinic for dosing

Mechanism of Action

antiretroviral medication, an analogue of cytidine - inhibits  both types (1 and 2) of HIV reverse transcriptase and also the reverse transcriptase of hepatitis B virus.

Comments

Obtain medications from the Prevention of Perinatal HIV Transmission Kits.

Call Oak Tree Clinic at 604-875-2250 to inform them of delivery and consultation for monitoring therapy.

For treatment dosing for children living with HIV please contact the Oak Tree Clinic at 604-875-2250.

For infants of Birthing Individual/Mother at high risk of HIV, infant medications may be discontinued if maternal HIV infection ruled out (based on maternal HIV diagnostic PCR) in consultation with Oak Tree Clinic.

If infant discharged on lamivudine send supply home with caregiver.

Store at room temperature.

Can be administered with feeds or on an empty stomach. Do not mix lamivudine into formula.
