Mechanism of Action
Eye Lubricant - protection to cornea to minimize drying.

Eye drops:
Hydroxypropylmethylcellulose 0.5%, 1% eye drops (Isopto Tears, hypromellose)
Polyvinyl alcohol 1.4% (Tears plus [multi-use container], Refresh [single-use container *Preservative-free*])
Eye gel:
Carbomer eye ointment (Tear-Gel)
Eye ointment:
White petrolatum 80%, mineral oil 20% eye ointment (Soothe Night Time, Duolube, Lacrilube)
*Preservative-free*

Polyvinyl alcohol 1.4% (Tears plus [multi-use container], Refresh [single-use container *Preservative-free*])

*If more frequent use of the preservative-containing products is required, consult Ophthalmology.
Preservative-free alternatives may be used as often as necessary.
Adverse reactions:
Eye irritation (common with overuse of agents containing preservatives)
Preservative-free alternatives may be used as often as necessary.
White petrolatum and mineral oil ointment is the only preservative-free ointment available at BCWH.
Polyvinyl alcohol 1.4% single-use container is the only preservative free eye drop available at BCWH.
