Standard Prescription

hypertonic saline 7%     mL by inhalation__(frequency) (prior to physiotherapy)

Dosages

Via Inhalation by Cystic Fibrosis patients and non-Cystic Fibrosis patients with bronchiectasis: 4 mL by inhalation BID prior to physiotherapy.

May be increased to TID if needed.

(Dose is reduced to 2.5-3 mL for the eFlow Altera Nebulizer System due to
the efficiency of this nebulizer [not a hospital-supplied device; patients may use their own device])

Comments

Approved only for use by Cystic Fibrosis patients and non-Cystic Fibrosis patients with bronchiectasis to help clear mucous secretions or to induce sputum production.

Prescribing is limited to Respiratory Medicine.

May cause bronchospasm: must be administered with or immediately after a bronchodilator.

May be mixed with salbutamol 5 mg/mL solution for nebulization immediately prior to dose.
