Dosages
Children:
1.25-5 mg/kg/dose PO once daily to QID (up to 5 mg/kg/day)
Usual Dose by Age:
3-6 yr: 20-60 mg
6-12 yr: 40-100 mg
>12 yr and Adult: 100-200 mg

Comments
PO: Requires 1-3 days to effectively soften stools. Ensure adequate fluid intake.
PR: Can be given rectally as enema to older children (add 50-100 mg of oral solution to enema fluid).
Do not administer concurrently with mineral oil as increased absorption of mineral oil may occur (docusate is a surfactant).
Oral liquid is BITTER. Diluting in milk, formula, or juice may help disguise bad taste.
