Use all other non-pharmacological comfort care measures before considering oral sucrose. Refer to Pain Management: Infants undergoing routine minor painful procedures on PHSA SHOP. Avoid in patients on a ketogenic diet. Oral sucrose can be used with other approaches for reducing procedural pain from a single event with some infant populations. Do not dilute sucrose products. Place a full dose of sucrose solution on the anterior tongue or buccal surface or, moisten a pacifier, gloved finger, or cotton tipped applicator with the sucrose solution 2 minutes prior to start of procedure. Standard Prescription: Give __ mL - 1 dose 2 minutes prior to procedure. |
